Basis weight, bulk and density calculator

Customers and specifications don't always use the same units. This converter turns grammage into the common imperial basis weights, each with its ream size, so there's no doubt which one you're quoting.

Add the caliper to get bulk and apparent density, two of the properties that matter most for tissue softness and for printing and packaging grades.

Basis weight, bulk and density

Convert grammage to imperial basis weights, and work out bulk and density from caliper.

g/m²
µm

Bulk

1.25cm³/g

Apparent density
800 kg/m³
Tissue / newsprint / kraft (3000 ft²)
49.1 lb
Bond / writing (17 × 22, 500 sheets)
21.3 lb
Text / book (25 × 38, 500 sheets)
54.1 lb
Cover (20 × 26, 500 sheets)
29.6 lb
How it's calculated

Bulk = caliper ÷ grammage. Density = grammage ÷ caliper. Imperial basis weight = grammage × ream area ÷ 453.6 g/lb.
